Thought life, self-perceptions & patterns
The mental body or system includes conscious thoughts, thought patterns, self-perception, and self-image. It is the model of the world as we know it - our schema - and within that our values, our goals, and our mindset.
Physical health, physical things
The physical body or system is health, physical strength, energy, and our outward appearance. It is also the tangible things that people do or do not have in their lives. It's where the results show up.
Feelings, relationships with self & others
The emotional body or system is our relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners. It is self-care, self-treatment, and self-love. It is our emotional reactions, our unconscious mind, and our core issues.
True self, personal development, connection to all
The spiritual body or system is personal growth and development. It is energy, self-healing, and unconditional love. It is connection to God, our higher self, higher power, and to all that exists. It brings energy to all other systems.
THE 4 AREAS OF SELF
All four of these body systems make up each of us. All are interconnected and affect one another.
The Mental Body or System
When your mental system is out of balance, you experience negative, racing thoughts, and poor self-image. You are critical and judgemental of yourself and other people. You find it difficult to focus and to make simple choices. You experience negative emotions very strongly, perhaps magnifying them out of proportion. You suffer physically with illness and other physical, emotional, and spiritual problems.
Moving towards balance in the mental body or system means moving towards harmony in your thought life and your thought patterns. When your mental system is in balance, you will experience effective goals and actions, peaceful thoughts of self and others, clarity and congruent choices.
The Physical Body or System
When your physical body or system is out of balance, you experience weight gain, sleep issues, and exhaustion. You develop chronic conditions or diseases and experience frequent physical injury. The tangible things of life may be lost or unstable. You experience illness and other mental, emotional, and spiritual problems.
Moving towards balance in the physical body or system means moving towards physical health and having the things in life that we want to have. When the physical body or system is in balance, you experience a strong, healthy, balanced body. You have the things you desire. You experience stability, safety, and outer success.
The Emotional Body or System
When your emotional body or system is out of balance, you experience depression, mood swings, and trigger responses. You have illness and disease and a range of physical, mental, and spiritual problems.
Moving towards balance in the emotional body or system means moving towards freedom from negative thoughts and emotions of the past. It means moving towards the ability to give and receive love, to process and release emotions in a healthy way, and to have a rapport with your unconscious mind. When the emotional body or system is in balance, you will experience fulfilling relationships, and emotional balance and harmony. There will be congruency between your
conscious and your unconscious mind and your immune system will function optimally.
The Spiritual Body or System
When your spiritual body or system is out of balance, you experience conflict and mixed messages that lead to unwelcome outcomes. You have anxiety and depression and feel separate and alone. Your life feels to lack purpose and you don't know what you're meant to do in life. You experience all types of illness and have a range of physical, mental, and emotional problems.
Moving towards balance in the spiritual body or system means moving towards congruency with your higher self and alignment with your higher purpose. It is the path of spiritual development, of practicing and experiencing a connection to "God" as you define it. When the spiritual system is in balance, you will experience inner peace, connectedness, and wholeness. You will be able to give and to receive unconditional love. You will have a sense of community and will experience strength and wholeness in all other systems.
Why Integrative Wellness?
Fixing a "problem" in just one system - like going on a diet or starting a new exercise program - is unlikely to result in lasting and meaningful change. This is because perceived problems are only outward manifestations of what is taking place inwardly.
Working from the inside-out and the outside-in across all four systems of self is the only way to achieve real and lasting change. This is especially true for complex efforts such as dementia risk reduction.
"Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power."
