Thanks to my mom for telling me about DIY hand sanitizer. Maybe I am the only person on the planet who hadn't heard of this before yesterday, but in case you too have been searching in vain for something - ANYTHING - to sterilize your hands, here's an easy recipe.
5-10 drops lavender essential oil
30 drops tea tree essential oil
3 ounces high-proof vodka, Everclear, or Isopropyl rubbing alcohol
1 ounce pure aloe vera gel
1/4 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
How to Make It
Mix everything together and put in a repurposed (i.e. empty) old hand sanitizer or another pump-style bottle. If you want a spray-on version, just swap out witch hazel for the aloe vera gel, which is more of a delivery mechanism for the sanitizer than a critical component of the mixture. The essential and Vitamin E oils are not totally necessary, so if you can't get your hands on all the ingredients you can literally sterilize your hands by using straight vodka, Everclear or rubbing alcohol. That, however, is murder on your skin.
Lavender and tea tree oil smell nice and they add extra antibacterial, antiviral properties to the mix. Vitamin E oil makes this much easier on your skin.
